Camphill is an international movement of life-sharing communities designed to meet the needs of children, adolescents and adults with developmental disabilities. There are over 100 Camphill communities worldwide, eight of which are in North America. The communities focus on residential care, education, training, social, artistic and vocational opportunities for people with developmental disabilities.

Camphill focuses on the abilities of each person, not the disabilities. Individuals with developmental disabilities live and work together with career volunteer coworkers in extended family settings. The contribution of each individual’s gifts and talents is encouraged, and all community members learn from each other in a process of mutual interaction.

Camphill was founded in 1939 in Scotland by the Austrian pediatrician Dr. Karl König (1902-1966), who was inspired by the Anthroposophical work of Rudolf Steiner, Ph.D. (1861-1925), which upholds the spiritual integrity and reality of each human individuality. Dr. König fled the Nazi invasion of his own country and settled with a group of young physicians, artists and caregivers near Aberdeen, where they pioneered curative educational methods of working with children with special developmental needs.
