An Open Letter for Change

A letter from Roger Begelman, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Camphill Foundation, and Bernard Murphy, Chief Executive Officer and President of Camphill Foundation

We are all one global community, working to create personal dignity and freedom together. But people with developmental, cognitive and psychological disabilities often face lives of poverty and isolation. Camphill Foundation works collaboratively to transform this stark reality. When we invest in community, we create a more just and equal world.

Since 1966, we have provided leadership in funding initiatives that use a social model of care as the primary intervention. This community approach enables people to work together and express their potential, each contributing their unique gifts and abilities.

Beginning in 2010, we will increase our fundraising efforts and the number of grants awarded, in order to bring the experience and spirit of Camphill Foundation into new areas. New grants will focus on strengthening our support in Africa and Asia, as well as funding new initiatives in the United States. We are particularly concerned about those whose emotional and behavioral challenges are misdiagnosed and inadequately treated—this must change. All individuals have the right to an embracing, empowering and enriching environment.

We hope you will stay connected and support our vision. For more information and to get involved, sign up for our monthly newsletter, join the conversation on our blog, and share our work and vision with your family and friends.

Thank you for helping Camphill Foundation to build and sustain communities of respect and dignity for all.

Roger Begelman
